Gunmen kill Islamic scholar in Kano

Gunmen yesterday shot dead a prominent Islamic scholar, Malam Shu’aibu in Gwammaja area of Kano metropolis. The cleric was killed in front of his residence located behind Federal Secretariat complex at some minutes past 8pm, said residents.
Eyewitnesses said about four gunmen inside a car and others on motorbikes, accosted the deceased who was seated outside with his students, before shooting him to death.
Daily Trust gathered that the assailants ordered the students to leave the spot, after which they fired several shots at the scholar.
A resident of the area told our correspondent that the victim’s remains were later evacuated by the police to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano city.
Yesterday’s attack was the first in the state since the commencement of Ramadan fast.
Kano State Police Command, in its account of the incident through Police Public Relations Officer, SP Muhammad Rilwan Dutse, said three gunmen had been lurking inside a car parked outside the deceased’s house for about 30 minutes, awaiting his return from mosque before killing him.
Dutse said the police are searching the area for possible arrest of suspects.
Meanwhile, Daily Trust gathered that Malam Shu’aibu was the leader of Islamic astronomers in Kano.
