Erstwhile Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association, Kojo Williams is still celebrating Super Eagles victory at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
He is also celebrating the man who made it possible for Nigeria to break the 19-year wait before another Nations Cup victory.
“Stephen Keshi has shown that he is a natural leader. A motivator. He has not only made history for himself, he has placed Nigeria in the consciousness of the world. He deserves all that an appreciative nation bestows on him”, Williams said on our hotline.
However, Kojo Williams said that his joy for Keshi and the nation is more on the positive momentum this victory will bring for Nigerian football and as such has advised that the all-conquering coach works with a foreign coach to actualize the dream of producing a Nigerian team that can face any world team and come out unscathed.
“This is where I think that Keshi needs help. He needs a sound coach with a technical and tactical input. I repeat, such a coach will have to work under Keshi. Keshi was a great defender and has a lot to offer the team. Let’s not be carried away by the euphoria of victory. We should be thinking of strengthening our team and I think that once we do this, we are on the right path to regaining the glory days of our football”.
Williams identified the inept and myopic leadership of the past as to why some of the foreign technical hands could not function well. “They always go for wrong people. Nigerians are wise and know who the good coaches are. But we go to the wrong people and compromise with them. That is why we never got it right. Keshi has started a good job. We should work on it by bringing an expert that can work with him. All those saying no to foreign coach are not being realistic. And Keshi can’t say foreign coaches are carpenters. Frankly, I’m looking forward to the positive momentum this victory will bring to Nigerian football. We need to build it on it”, Williams emphasized.
