The Ojukwu family yesterday announced the funeral rites of the late Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. The family led by Chukwuemeka Ojukwu jnr, said the funeral rites for the late ex-Biafran warlord, would span three Igbo market weeks, in line with the Igbo and Nnewi customs and traditions.
Addressing the leadership of the Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria (MTUN) and Autobike Owners Association of Nigeria (AOWAN), when they visited the Ojukwu family compound to commiserate with them, Emeka Ojukwu jnr said, a mausoleum is being constructed where the remains of the Igbo leader would be interred.
“My father, the Ikemba will arrive Abuja on the 30th of January, from where he will be taken round some of the old Eastern states. He will finally be laid to rest after a requiem mass, in the mausoleum being constructed for him here in his compound. This will contain mementos of the life and times of my father.
“The Igbo traditional culture of a three-week funeral rites will be strictly observed, while masquerades from all over the country will be hosted. We thank President Goodluck Jonathan, who has promised to give my father the best burial ever given a Nigerian and many others, for their support,” he said.
Condoling with the Ojukwus, the National Chief Task Officer on Security for MTUN and AOWAN, Dr. Jim Okonkwo, said they came to identify with the family, because the late Eze Igbo Gburu Gburu was their National Patron. He pointed out that Ojukwu’s death was a great loss to the nation, and appealed to the family to bear their loss with fortitude.
Okonkwo, who equally used the opportunity to declare the group’s support for the deregulation of the downstream sector, called on organized labour and other civil and rights groups to engage in meaningful dialogue with the Federal Government, in order to end the present crisis.
