Robbers snatch Ogun Speaker’s official car


About 24 hours after the Ogun State Government took delivery of two more Armoured Personnel Carriers, armed robbers on Thursday night snatched one of the official cars of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi, in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The seven-man gang, who had laid in ambush along the popular Abiola Way, snatched the Toyota Avensis car with number plate Ogun AYE 86 AA at gunpoint from Adekunbi, who was said to be in company with one of his security aides.
The Speaker, sources said, was driving the car while his security aide sat beside him when the robbers attacked them around 7 pm.
SATURDAY PUNCH learnt the robbers eventually released the Speaker and his aide at Kobape, along the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway, a distance of about 20 minutes’ drive from Abeokuta.
Our correspondent learnt that the incident had been reported to the police, who are making efforts to recover the stolen vehicle.
However, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Speaker, Waheed Akinola, denied knowledge of the incident, saying “I don’t think that can happen.”
Similarly, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said the command was not aware of the robbery.
Meanwhile, Governor Ibikunle Amosun has announced the delivery of two more APCs to the police in the state.
Amosun said the APCs would be deployed to the senatorial districts to help beef up security.
