Though it is generally accepted that a man should be his brother’s keeper, the move to practise this saying almost spelt doom for a Good Samaritan, Mr. Oluwole, as the young man he took into his household to help turned against him and brought an armed robbery gang into his house to cart away his property. Mr. Oluwole had a commercial bus and met with one Michael Sunday from Benue State at Obalende area of Lagos State. Michael was working as a conductor but Mr. Oluwole was touched by his lifestyle, hence he decided to make Michael a member of his household by asking him to come and live with him in his house at Sango in Ogun State. To his surprise, however, after spending about two months in his house, Michael told his guardian that he wanted to leave. Unknown to him, Michael had other plans which manifested barely two weeks after he left Oluwole’s place. On April 27, Michael mobilised three gang members – Saheed Sulaimon (25), Nurudeen Abiola (16) and Abiodun Kazeem (20) to join him, making four of them, and they took off to Sango where Oluwole lived. According to information gathered from police sources in Ogun State, the gang members arrived the place at about 10pm and hid themselves in an uncompleted building close to the targeted place. When it was 3am, they scaled the fence of Oluwole’s house and entered his apartment through the exit door. After ransacking the entire place, all they could find was a little cash and the man’s phone. “They took my N6,500 and my phone. It was when they were already going that I woke up. I saw them going away with my Faragon bus and I tried to raise an alarm. I didn’t know that while Michael was with me, he had taken the duplicate keys to the vehicle and the gate,” Oluwole narrated. However, nemesis quickly caught up with gang as they missed their way on their way out of the area. They got to a point and met vigilante men who challenged them for moving so early. Abiodun Kazeem (20) was very aggressive in his approach and this was said to have angered the vigilante men who ordered him to disembark from the bus. On seeing this, others drove off, leaving him to his fate. They arrived Berger area of Lagos at about 8a.m. in the morning, parked the vehicle near a mechanic’s workshop and left to eat. Michael was the first to return and he stood by. However, when the owner of the workshop where they parked came, he noticed the vehicle parked in his workshop and asked for the owner. His apprentice, who saw Michael and his gang when they came, pointed at him but Michael denied being the owner. He was promptly held while the mechanic and others searched through the bus. They found the particulars of the bus and called the phone therein. That was how they discovered that the vehicle was stolen. Speaking with Crime Features, the gang leader, Michael confirmed that Oluwole took him in and said he would pay for him to learn furniture. According to Michael, “though he took me to the place I was to learn the vocation, I did not start in time. I kept troubling him and when I saw that he was promising me and was not taking any action, I decided to leave. I lived with him for two months and it was after I left that I planned to go and rob him.” Confirming the story, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi said the suspect had been charged to court
