Nine mosque builders slaughtered in Borno

NINE construction workers involved in building the new Maiduguri central mosque were slaughtered at their home in the Borno State capital early yesterday.
Residents of Bolori Quarters where the incident happened said they woke up to find the nine bodies with wounds to their necks and in pools of blood.
A security source said attackers trailed the workers to a rented apartment they were living in and killed them in the dead of the night. “The incident took place around 1.45am and was reported at about 6.05am,” the source said.
It is not clear who killed the construction workers and why, and no group has yet claimed responsibility for the crime. The new mosque they were involved in building is situated in front of the palace of the Shehu of Borno.
Authorities said bodies of the victims were deposited at the mortuary of the Borno State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri. Security agencies confirmed the incident and said they were yet to make any arrests as investigation opened.
Slaughtering of people has been one of the methods used by attackers unleashing violence in Maiduguri for the past two years. Residents believe that the killing of people by slaughtering is meant to avoid sound of gunshots that is likely to attract the operatives of the Joint Task Force.
