News Nigeria gathered from sources at the scene that it was the presence of policemen on guard that prevented the attackers of achieving massive casualties in the terrorist attack.
It was learnt that the gunmen arrived at the church premises in Gombe when the parishioners were coming out of the early morning service and fired shots, killing one policeman on the spot.
The gun-touting terrorists made frantic attempts to gain entry into the church premises to carry out their actual attack but failed after the parishioners succeeded in shutting the gate.
“As soon as the parishioners heard the gun shots, they immediately shut the gate to the church,” the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Williams Ochai said.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Gombe State, Rev. Abare Kalla, described it as unfortunate. He disclosed that CAN had information that there would be an attack, but did not know where it would occur.
