Abuja – The Federal Government on Tuesday in Abuja inaugurated a national implementation committee on Traffic Camera Surveillance and Safety Certification Scheme to prevent risk and accident
Under the scheme, smart cameras would be deployed on the roads to assist in the reduction of serious and fatal speed-related road accidents and unethical behaviours.
The scheme is a Public Private Partnership championed by the Risk and Accident Prevention Society of Nigeria (RAPSON), an NGO, in collaboration with the office of the Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Values.
Inaugurating the committee, Dr Sarah Jibril, the Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Values, said that if every Nigerian would abide by the law, many lives would be saved.
“One needs autonomous morality, one needs to police oneself and be law abiding in order to be a responsible citizen,’’ she said.
The presidential Aide, however, urged Nigerians to embrace attitudinal change and ethical values to ensure the rapid development of the country.
In his remarks, Mr Ben Koko, the Chairman of RAPSON, said the major component of the scheme was to make behavioural change a foundation for efficient safety practice, using the media and other relevant stakeholders.
Koko said the objective of the scheme was to make Nigeria a safe, sane and secured society by adopting scientific approach to risk and accident management.
According to him, accident prevention and risk management have gone scientific.
“Countries that are using scientific method in accident and risk management have had accident occurrences reduced and with it the toll of injuries, deaths and loses.
“This is so because the people are better oriented to live risk-free lifestyle. The most effective way of preventing or reducing accidents is behaviour change,’’ he said.
Responding on behalf of the committee, Muazu Haruna, a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, promised to work hard to ensure the realisation of the project.
Haruna said the partnership would impact positively on the development of the country.
