WARRI – MEN of the Nigerian Army, 3 Battallion, Effurun, Delta State, deployed to Oviorie Check Point in Ethiope East Local Government Area, yesterday gunned down two suspected armed robbers and recovered two AK-47 rifles with four loaded magazines painted in police colour.
Major Anthony Nlemadim, Officer in-Charge, Bravo Company, who led the operation on behalf of Lt. Colonel Ifeanyi Otu, Commanding Officer, 3 Battalion, disclosed this.
He said: “At about 4.30am, my men deployed to Oviorie Check point were alerted by the people around that armed robbers were terrorising the area. I quickly mobilised my men and in the course of the exchange of fire, two of the robbers were gunned down, we believe that there were others. They were carrying sophisticated weapons, AK-47 with magazine painted in Police colour believed to have been snatched from them.
“My Commanding Officer, having received directive from Army Headquarters, decided to form a check point to fight kidnapping and robbery. Since establishing the check point, the wave of crime has reduced. For us to continue the good work, it is good for the public to give us information because as they said, ‘Evil thrives where good men keep quiet.’ We will not allow any form of crime.”
