Why Senate wants role for traditional rulers

The Senate Committee on Constitution Review has included the role of traditional rulers in the agenda for the new phase of the amendment of the 1999 constitution to make their role uniform across the nation, a member of the committee, Senator Ita Enang (PDP, Akwa Ibom North East) has said.

Enang, who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, said this Friday in Abuja while receiving the Akwa Ibom State Council of Traditional Rulers. “This is to inform you that Senator Abdullahi Adamu has proposed a bill to give traditional rulers in the country specific role, but we, in the constitution review committee, are trying to elevate it beyond a normal law to a constitutional provision,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council of Traditional Rulers, Edidem Ukuku Inyang Udousoro, said peace continued to elude the nation owing to the neglect of the traditional institution by the military.
