A commercial aircraft belonging to Dana Air heading to Abuja on a local flight crashed in a densely populated residential area in the Iju/Shaga area of Lagos less than five minutes from Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos.
Several eyewitnesses, including a rescue worker, confirmed the story of the young survivor. Though her nationality and other details about her are not yet known, the eye witnesses said she was white. She was also said to have been badly wounded and was immediately rushed off for medical attention.
Initial reports quoting the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority said it was unlikely any of the 153 passengers on board had survived the crash. A statement from the Ministry of Aviation however said there were 147 people on board. It is not yet certain if there was any casualty on the ground. The two-storey building that the plane crashed into reportedly accommodates a church.
"It was a Dana (airline) flight out of (the capital) Abuja to Lagos with about 153 people on board," Harold Demuren, head of NCAA said. "I don't believe there are any survivors."
The crowd around the crash site are also becoming agitated and it is becoming increasingly difficult for the security agents around the site to maintain the security cordon they had set up to keep the crowd from the site.
Earlier, a spokesman for Nigerian airline Dana confirmed one of its planes had crashed but could not immediately provide further details.
"I can confirm that one of our planes crashed today on the outskirts of Lagos," Tony Usidamen told AFP.
"We lost communication with the aircraft. We are going to issue an official statement."
